The importance of fire safety signs

Category: Safety Signs — By Ruth

Fire safety is now an integral part of every organisation. Fire safety signs are informative sign boards that help prepare people in case of a fire emergency. They are now required by law to be posted in all public places and that includes office buildings. Fire safety signs are meant to assist people and aid their survival by informing them about the locations of escape routes, fire extinguishers and manual alarms.

In the UK, the British Standard type of signage is used widely. If you already have fire safety signs installed in your building, ensure they are clean and easily readable with prominent pictograms. The placement of these signs must be strategic. People should be able to spot them easily and understand the directions being given by the sign. Signs that point to escape routes should have arrows drawn on them correctly and some simple bold text to make things easier in case of a fire. Also, ensure that the size of a sign is large enough to see clearly and appropriate lighting is provided at night.

There are guidelines for the height at which these signs must be placed. When placed over doors, a height of 2-2.5 metres is required. On a wall, 1.7-2 metres is the specified height. Outdoors, the height can vary according to visual judgment for maximum prominence.

For any further details or questions about the laws for fire safety signs, contact your local fire department. Installing these signs is a very important safety measure and will go a long way to save lives in case of an emergency.
