Road signs are a common sight as you drive along any busy road or motorway. These signs can seem to be a part of the road and are used for the purpose of giving out information to people on a number of issues. These signs are very important and hence you should know how to read them in order to avoid accidents on the road.

Road signs give out a number of messages regarding the road and what you as a driver should expect on the road. Therefore, if followed properly, road signs help maintain discipline on the road. Road signs are placed in a manner that makes them visible to the driver from a distance. This helps drivers consider the condition of the road ahead as described by the sign; they may need to change their speed accordingly.

Road signs need to be placed at a considerable distance from one another. In this way the driver will not be confused and this will prevent misunderstanding and accidents occurring. Road signs come in different shapes and colours, where each stands for a particular message. This makes it possible to recognise a road sign before a driver actually reaches it. The size of a road sign also differs depending on the message it has to give.

Recognising and knowing road signs are part of the legal criteria for getting a driver’s licence and are the key component in a driving theory test.

The most important thing a newly qualified driver must remember is the proper use and knowledge of road traffic signs. Whether you are the driver or a passenger, you will have noticed the various signs along the road side. These signs are very important as they serve the purpose of guiding, warning and helping to regulate traffic flow for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. These signs need to be given proper attention and respected by drivers for their own safety and for the safety of others.

There are many different kinds of road signs and they are mostly placed above or beside highways and streets. When there are many signs within a short space of one another it can lead to confusion and misunderstanding, sometimes resulting in traffic jams and accidents. Road signs are designed to be easily recognised by the drivers. For instance, a circle is used as an early warning signal for a railroad and an octagon is solely used as a stop sign. There is one shaped like a pentagon, assigned for schools and a trapezoid shape implies a recreational site.

In addition, colours like red implore you to stop, green as guide information, orange as short term traffic control and yellow for warning. It is important for every person to have proper knowledge about these signs for safety purposes.

Nameplate signs to convey professionalism

Every profession has something to contribute to society. However, if the professional themselves are unknown, then all the years spent in education gaining accreditation can be laid to waste. For this very purpose, professional signs are used. Professional signs, like nameplates on the office door or the office desk aid in directing clients to approach the professional.

Signs can be used to reveal the identity of a professional person. A single building can contain several doctors and each one may have a different specialisation. However, for a patient, every doctor remains the same unless one is aware of the specialisation. Professional nameplates on the door can make the task simpler for the visiting patients.

Similarly, in an organisation there will be various departments and management offices. In order to distinguish each department, professional signs will almost certainly be necessary. This not only avoids confusion, but provides the professional with a degree of respect.

Signs can reveal an awful lot. However, they should still remain slightly discrete. Too much information could overcomplicate and even dilute the impact of its message.

Even the choice of material needs to be appropriate, as a senior manager or director of a company may not wish to have a plastic sign on the door. Signs constructed out of metal or wood will be durable and elegant, which is why professionals tend to use them for signs.

Even the size of the professional nameplate may vary. While signs placed on a door may be medium sized, the signs placed in front of company gates will be large, bold and magnified.

Use Signs for attention, interest and action

Signs can invoke feelings, interests and actions in a person. If you walk down any street you will witness several signs of varying designs, but each with different motives. They all have one single objective, to educate.

Every sign has something to warn you about, or telling you to beware of something and also to inform. Such signs are particularly important in keeping people safe from unforeseen events and accidents.

Signs placed in front of fire stations, gas stations, construction sites, schools, uneven roads or anywhere in a public place, provide us with a sense of safety and feeling of protection. Similarly, signs at trade shows, events, outside shops or at theatres provide vital information. This shows that signs can be versatile in nature and while the information remains constant, the content can keep on changing.

While signs can attract people to them, they can also be used to prevent crimes. Signs can be either professional looking or simple. While professional signs require specific attention and detail, simple signs can still be effective. Materials, from cardboard to metal, wood or PVC can all be used for making signs.

The material of a sign can be selected dependent upon its usability. If the sign is for road display then cheap materials such as plastic, acrylic or cardboard are ideal choices. These options are efficient, reusable and cost effective. For professional, established organisations the materials preferred are mostly metallic compounds like iron, bronze, steel or aluminium.

From the layout to the content, everything within the sign is important and informative.

Signs are more than just words and images

Signs are vital for creating an impact. Signs are required in every industry as they speak volumes. From information to invitation, signs can reveal anything and everything. Signs are used so extensively because most of us rely on them for directions and guidelines.

While all signs are informative in nature, some of them can often be misleading. This is mainly because either they are poorly constructed, or wrongly positioned. The design of the sign needs to be clear and concise. Too much detail can leave the viewer confused.

The measurements of a sign can make a lot of difference. For example, big institutions cannot have miniscule signs by their entrances and it would not be practical for a desk in an office to have a large bulky sign. Therefore, evaluate your needs before making any decision.

The quality of material also varies. While road-side signs can be made out of cheap metals or cardboards, materials like bronze, steel or PVC are ideal for professional signs like nameplates.

Signs need to be clear and precise. Good quality signs will last a long time. If signs are reusable in nature then they prove to be cost effective. Visibility is important for every sign and therefore they should be placed properly. Even the engraving or printing of words and images should complement the material of the sign. Signs do have an important purpose to convey, which is why they should be as perfect as possible.

Dangers of roadworks

Roadworks can be considered dangerous as they lead to accidents and pile ups. They are a major cause of traffic jams and inconvenience. They do not only pose a threat to drivers but also to the people around and the construction workers as well.

Roadworks can be very annoying, but it is always advisable to be vigilant and to be in a cool state of mind to avoid any kind of incident. The best way to deal with such problems is by driving slowly and by following the road signs properly.

It has been noticed quite often that many road signs are ignored. For instance the speed limit sign is frequently ignored. We must understand the fact that there is simply no room for errors near roadworks. Whenever there are uneven lanes, there is a risk that an exceptionally top-heavy vehicle can roll over. Every year, the number of accidents taking place near roadworks keeps increasing. The reason could be because of irresponsible driving and also confusing signs. It is important to learn all the road signs properly before driving.

Improperly designed barricades are another problem. Barricades should be solid. They should not generally be made of orange cones as they do not make a very good barricade.
